Town works with Eversource on series of energy improvements, earns national distinction
WOLCOTT, Conn. – November 10, 2017 – All five of Wolcott’s public schools recently received ENERGY STAR® certifications from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The town worked with Eversource on energy-saving improvements at each school and was recognized by the EPA for energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and protecting the environment.
The EPA assessed and rated the schools’ energy usage on a scale from 1 to 100 in energy efficiency, with a goal of achieving 75 or greater. Alcott Elementary School received an ENERGY STAR score of 96; Frisbie Elementary School received a 97; Tyrrell Middle School received a 98; Wakelee Elementary School received a 100, and Wolcott High School received a 96.
“Wolcott’s energy efficiency efforts will not only save the town money, but the improvements will also provide students and faculty with a more comfortable learning environment,” said Eversource Energy Efficiency spokesman Enoch Lenge. “We are proud to honor each school for this accomplishment and look forward to working with the town to reach its overall energy reduction goals.”
To achieve the certification, Wolcott Public Schools completed Eversource’s Municipal Technical Assistance program, which uses an ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager tool to benchmark energy usage, water usage, and greenhouse gas emissions from all municipal and board of education buildings. Energy efficiency improvements completed at the schools included LED lighting upgrades in parking lots, cafeterias, auditoriums and media centers.
In 2013, Wolcott joined Clean Energy Communities, the nationally-recognized Energize Connecticut program managed by Eversource that help cities and towns save energy. The town is currently working with Eversource to reach program goals and reduce municipal building energy consumption by 20 percent by the end of 2018.
