How Operations and Maintenance Works ➞

Steps to Take Smart Energy Action

Utility energy experts work with your design professional, contractor or facilities group to identify opportunities for operations and maintenance improvements at your facility. Based on the findings, we review your proposal and help you assure the savings proposed from those changes.

Operation and Maintenance energy efficiency measures may be eligible for incentives to offset a portion of the installed project cost. When appropriate, we may provide training and outreach to help your in-house personnel maintain the energy-efficient improvements over time. Find details of the current incentive structure on your utility’s website.

Utility representatives provide the general and technical support necessary – as determined by the size and complexity of the project – to prepare an agreement for signature before you implement your O&M measures. This agreement details all energy-efficient measures, estimated energy savings and the proposed incentive amounts.

After the project is completed and the measures are inspected and verified, you will receive your incentive payment.

Each facility is unique, but examples of common energy-saving O&M measures include:

    • Improvements to compressed air systems, such as repairing leaks or installing solenoid valves that automatically shut off air supply to machines when they are not running
    • Rewiring of lighting circuits for more efficient control
    • Maintenance of the facility’s energy management system including reprogramming and replacing defective sensors, relays and actuators
    • Repairs or replacement of defective steam traps

    Success Story ➞

The O&G team has a longstanding environmental commitment. O&G’s Facilities Manager Tony Blanchard and its General Counsel Paul Balavender set out to increase productivity and efficiency across the organization and focus on specialized solutions and green initiatives to reduce energy use while increasing productivity across its footprint. The team needed to get to work, and they couldn’t do it alone.

Eversource has partnered with the O&G team to complete several lighting and equipment updates at a few locations. Knowing Tony and Paul were considering larger projects, Eversource Energy Efficiency Consultant Jim Racca invited them to a gathering of commercial customers and trade allies. During the event, Jim introduced O&G to experts at Loureiro Engineering, a firm with a proven track record of assisting industrial companies with multi-site energy efficiency strategies. Before the close of the event, Jim scheduled a follow-up meeting. Over the next few months, the team established the groundwork to address and improve energy use at its locations in Stamford, Beacon Falls, Harwinton, New Milford, Danbury, Southbury, and Waterbury.

Together with Eversource, O&G was able to access the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund and
outside engineering expertise to help devise a comprehensive plan to reduce their energy use.
