Which ZEV is right for you? These resources can help you find out.

Thinking of getting a ZEV? Here are some items to consider when looking for the right ZEV to fit your lifestyle, and navigating the ZEV shopping experience.

Buying or leasing a ZEV can be quite daunting, especially for first-time shoppers. Although you will contend with traditional concerns such as price, comfort, handling, and cargo space, ZEV shopping will require you to rethink your approach to "refueling" your potential car and how far it can travel between charges.

Doing your research is key! To get you started, below are some of the web tools we've come across that can inform your choices and help you navigate the ZEV shopping experience.

Vehicle Explore Tool (Drive Change Drive Electric):  The Drive Change Drive Electric's Vehicle Explore Tool helps you find a BEV or PHEV that meets your needs according to vehicle body style (i.e., crossover, hatchback, minivan, sedan, sports, or SUV).

Eligible Vehicle List for CHEAPR Incentive (EVConnecticut):  If you're looking to take advantage of the CHEAPR incentive, make sure you check EVConnecticut's Eligible Vehicle List. Program-eligibility for CHEAPR is limited to just the vehicle models that are highway capable, have a base MSRP under $50,000 for BEVs and PHEVs or under $60,000 for FCEVs, and be sold by a licensed Connecticut franchised new automobile dealership.

Pick a Plug In (Sierra Club):  The Sierra Club's Pick a Plug In is a web tool that helps you find BEVs and PHEVs compatible with your lifestyle. Your responses to six questions results in a list of EVs with details on electric range, availability, purchase price (after applying the federal tax credit), and whether the EV is all-electric or a plug-in hybrid.

Shopping Assistant (Plug In America):  Plug In America's Shopping Assistant is web tool that asks for your driving needs to find out if an EV is right for you. You can additionally use resources available at Plug In America to browse for EVs, find a local test drive event, and find an EV dealer or retailer.

Compare Fuel Cell Vehicles (U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy):  Interested in a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV)? The U.S. Department of Energy's Compare Fuel Cell Vehicles webpage provides a side-by-side comparison of the FCEVs currently for sale or lease in the U.S. Also check out the DOE's webpage on How Fuel Cells Work.

As leased ZEVs come off their leases, they often re-enter the market as used vehicles at more affordable prices. We recommend that you contact dealerships directly or check their online listings for used ZEVs available for purchase.

For more guidance, take advantage of Plug In America's Used Electric Car Buyers' Guide, which takes you through the finer points of shopping for a used EV.

A pivotal moment in choosing a new car is the driving experience. Give yourself the opportunity to take a ZEV for a spin!
