Information & Tips
Heat pump water heaters are twice as efficient as other electric water heaters because they move heat instead of generating it, just like a refrigerator, but in reverse. And because they use the existing heat in the ambient air, they’re very efficient.
Heat pump water heaters come in different shapes and styles. Some models are called “hybrid” water heaters because they can switch modes to operate like a standard electric model when needed—like a hybrid car switching modes for a quick boost of power. This flexibility allows hybrid water heaters to balance efficiency and performance.
Heat pump water heaters make the same amount of hot water using 70 percent less electricity. They use 1/3 the electricity of conventional electric water heaters which conserves resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
On an annual basis, an ENERGY STAR certified commercial electric heat pump water heater would be expected to save at least 10 MWh with an emissions savings equivalent to removing 1.5 cars from the road per year.
Heat pump water heaters are also known as “hybrid water heaters” because, during periods of high demand, they switch to standard electric resistance heat—like hybrid car switching modes. This flexibility allows heat pump water heaters to balance efficiency and performance. (Source: ENERGY STAR®)
Heat pump water heaters let you select from different operating modes including Efficiency (only using the heat pump to heat water), Auto (the default setting), Electric (just using electricity to heat water), and Vacation (not available on all models, but lets you save energy by putting the unit in “sleep” mode while you’re gone). Heat pump water heaters are unique compared to other water heaters in that their performance and efficiency are dependent on the conditions in which they operate. Case Studies
“I am so ecstatic! There is no way I would have been able to afford any of this on my own. I would’ve bought the less efficient, cheaper products on the market and even that would’ve been a financial burden,” said Susan Weretelnik, homeowner. “Thank you Eversource and BantamWesson. I am forever grateful.”
